THE COMPANY |
"Having trained in both contemporary dance as well as traditional Quebec
step dance, I wish to create a unique choreographic style by merging the two
together. As a Quebecoise, I believe that our traditional step dancing can find
a way of staying current, by expressing and being representative of today's
realities, while still staying connected to its roots. Choreographic fusion
generates wonderful and endless creative possibilities to update our dance tradition.
I have discovered that the dancing body can simultaneously be a percussive instrument
and a conveyor of emotions, which enables it to capture the essence and soul
of our traditional music.
My artistic goal is thus to develop a contemporary vision of the Quebecois identity through dance and choreography".
Marie-Soleil Pilette
In recent years, the Québec trad music and dance scene has been a bubbling cauldron of creative vitality that has begun to make a place on the contemporary arts scene. Choreographer Marie-Soleil Pilette and her company SANS TEMPS danse are some of the key players in the rebirth of this “new” trad dance scene.
SANS TEMPS danse is synonym for high rhythm, high energy and 100% percussive dancing. Montreal choreographer Marie-Soleil Pilette mixes Quebec's traditional stepdancing, contemporary dance and percussive dance in an uncanny fashion and surprising manner.
The company was officially born in 2004, and has since been actively pursuing choreographic creation, performance and artistic education. This company's mandate is to produce and distribute Marie-Soleil Pilette'S work and the work of other associated artists. These works are for the most part, a merging of traditional " québecois " dance (mostly stepdancing) with contemporary dance, and emerge from highly structured choreographic research.
